The Day After Vault – Transfer Policy for Users

How we transfer your vault to trusted recipients when certain events occur

1. Overview

  • The Day After Vault lets you securely store documents, credentials, and instructions (“vault items”) and designate who should receive them later (“recipients”).
  • This policy explains when and how we transfer your vault items to your chosen recipients. It also explains the approvals required, how you can update or cancel transfer, and what the service operator can and cannot see.
  • This policy summarizes the transfer protocol (DAV‑TP v0.1) in plain language for end users.

2. Key Terms

  • Owner: You, the person who creates the vault and sets a transfer policy.
  • Recipients: The people who receive specific vault items if transfer is approved.
  • Guardians: Trusted people who confirm the transfer should proceed. You control who they are and how many approvals are required.
  • Grace period: A waiting window (default 14 days) after a transfer is requested, during which you can cancel if you are able to access your account.
  • Transfer Ticket: A locked summary of what will be released, created from your policy. It avoids mistakes at transfer time.

3. When a Transfer May Start

  • Inactivity trigger: If you don’t sign in or acknowledge a keep‑alive for a set period (for example, 60 days), we may start a soft transfer review.
  • Evidence trigger: We may accept documentary evidence (e.g., a death certificate) from your guardians or your estate representative.
  • We notify your account email and your guardians when a trigger is detected. The grace period starts at the same time.

4. Approvals Required (Guardian Quorum)

  • You define a guardian group and approval threshold (for example, 2 of 3).
  • A transfer proceeds only if at least the threshold number of guardians approve during the grace period.
  • If a guardian is unavailable, the transfer can still proceed when the threshold is met.

5. Your Control During the Grace Period

  •   You can cancel transfer at any time during the grace period by signing in and selecting “Cancel transfer.”
  • Canceling ends the current request. A future trigger could start a new review if conditions are met again.
  • After the grace period ends, the transfer cannot be canceled.

6. What We Transfer

  •  Only the items you mapped to each recipient in your policy are released.
  • Each recipient receives a secure envelope containing the keys needed to decrypt their items, and only their items.
  • We do not transfer items you have not assigned, or that you removed before transfer.

7. What We Do Not Do

  •  We are not a law firm and we do not provide legal or tax advice.
  • We do not adjudicate disputes. We rely on the approvals and evidence rules you set in your policy.
  • We do not share your plaintext vault contents with anyone, including employees. Items are encrypted end‑to‑end.

8. Security & Privacy

  • Your items are encrypted with keys that only you (and, after approval, your recipients) can use. The service stores ciphertext and metadata only.
  • Guardian approvals and transfer records are signed and recorded for audit.
  • We minimize personal data, and we retain audit records of transfer decisions.

9. Updating Your Policy

  • You can change recipients, guardians, thresholds, grace period, and item mappings at any time from your account settings.
  • When you save changes, a new Transfer Ticket is created. Future transfers will follow the latest policy.

10. Edge Cases & Failures

  • If a recipient loses access to their keys before transfer, you or they can register a new key while you are alive.
  • If a guardian changes keys, you can update them anytime. During a transfer, any guardian with a registered key may approve.
  • If a recipient is unreachable after release, they can still claim items later with their registered identity.

11. Complaints & Disputes

  • If you believe a transfer review was started in error, cancel during the grace period and contact support.
  • If a recipient believes an item mapping is wrong, they must contact the owner’s estate or executor; we follow the owner’s saved policy.
